Allied Specialty Vehicles Names Robert Portney Director of Engineering of Champion Bus and Goshen Coach

Orlando, Fla. (Thursday, October 9, 2014) –Allied Specialty Vehicles, a leading manufacturer of motor vehicles for commercial, fire & emergency and recreation markets, today announced that Robert Portney has been named director of engineering of Champion Bus and Goshen Coach, two of ASV’s eight bus division brands. Portney will be based at the Champion Bus manufacturing plant in Imlay City, Mich., and split his time between this facility and the Goshen Coach manufacturing plant in Elkhart, Ind.

“Robert’s arrival strengthens ASV’s bus division,” said Kent Tyler, ASV’s bus division president and CEO.

“Robert’s diverse experience in automotive design and manufacturing, root cause analysis, lean manufacturing and VA/VE will allow us to leverage our technical resources to accelerate product development at both manufacturing facilities.”

In his new role, Portney will refine engineering and design processes to enhance product quality and manufacturing efficiencies so that all cost reduction improvements are consistent with ASV’s lean manufacturing practices.

Portney arrives from Navistar where he held positions of increasing responsibility for the company’s commercial and IC school bus lines including senior engineering manager in the International truck CIW body and IC bus groups from January 2012 to April 2014; senior program manager–cost reduction from October 2013 to April 2014; and chief engineer of all body and components for Navistar’s IC bus line from April 2014 to June 2014. Prior to this, he was director of engineering, quality and warranty at Finn Corporation and Express Blower from July 2005 to December 2011, and body design engineering manager (chief engineer) at North American Bus Industries (NABI) from January 1998 to July 2005. Portney earned his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Alabama in 1997.
